In Venice there are many bridges, but this one – Ponte dei Sospiri – is quite unique.
Hidden between the Doge’s Palace and the old prison, this small bridge holds a mysterious allure, attracting visitors from around the world.
Its name, that can be translated into the Bridge of Sighs, hints at something deeper than just another crossing over the canals.
According to the legend the Bridge derives its from the sighs of prisoners who crossed it, catching their last glimpse of Venice’s beauty just before being led to their fate. The views through the small windows representing their final moment of freedom.
Reaching the Ponte dei Sospiri is quite easy. It’s located just a few minutes from St. Mark’s Square, the heart of Venice.
Head toward the Doge’s Palace, and you’ll find the bridge connecting the palace to the prison across the Rio di Palazzo canal. We reccomend you to admire it from the nearby Ponte della Paglia, which offers the best views of its beautiful stone arch. You can also pass underneath the Bridge by gondola for a more romantic experience.
The bridge is a perfect symbol of the city’s blend of beauty and melancholy, capturing the imagination of romantics and historians alike.
